Power-infrastructure company, Techno Electric and Engineering Ltd (TEECL), has commenced the installation of 5.6 MW data centre at a financial outlay of 750 crore at the SIPCOT IT Park on OMR in Chennai. The facility is the first phase of the 24 MW data centre being set up at an investment of 1,400 crore. While the 5.6 MW will be completed by September next year, the entire facility is likely to be operational by 2026.
Ankit Saraiya, director & head of data centre vertical – TEECL said, the facility will generate direct employment to approximately 150 people and for 500 indirectly. The company is planning to install 250 MW by 2030 with the next two projects in Mumbai and Kolkata.
“We might come up with one more data centre in Chennai seeing the traction and how the industry progresses. When we speak about building 250 MW data centres, we might think about another data centre in Chennai. We would like to explore a couple of other cities before coming back to Chennai,” he told TOI.
Currently, the city has an installed capacity of 56 MW data centre, which is expected to reach 115 MW by 2024. Saraiya said, Chennai will remain as an important location for the industry. “One of the most important reasons for it is because there are multiple submarine cable landing stations in the city,” he said.
Meanwhile, a report by CBRE titled ‘Chennai 2030: Expanding Horizons’ released on Thursday said the city has emerged as one of the fastest growing data centre markets in the country next to Mumbai and Bengaluru. In recent times, Oragadam has been witnessing growing investor interest and is expected to emerge as a key data centre destination in the city.
Preetham Mehra, senior executive director, CBRE India said, “The city has a total installed capacity of 56 MW data centre. In the next two years, we are expecting this capacity to double as data centres are in various stages of installation, planning and acquisition,” he added.
